Word on the Street: African Wedding Inspiration with Lerato Dumisa (part 2)

November 14 By Elizabeth

What is the one fashion item you feel is essential?

I have a bag fetish and one of my favourite bags since like birth (lol) is the classic black Chanel jumbo handbag, it’s kind of an obsession really.

What is the FIRST thing you notice at a wedding?

Well I’m sort of also obsessed with decor, so – it’s weird to say but I always notice the chairs chosen before I even notice the table decor which is the second thing I notice closely followed by the bride’s dress lol. I think I notice the chair so much because it sort sets the standard of how regal I should expect the wedding to be. Anyone can throw a beautiful table setting together and of course the bride is always expected to look good however it is only when you’ve paid such careful attention to even the seating decor that I know what I’m in for. People usually just toss some fairy lights on the chairs or simply cover the chairs with covers but when you choose that extra element of a throne to sit on, throughout your event, I know that the wedding is going to be a regal affair.

In terms of wedding style, how much is OTT and what is just enough? Or even, if the OTT style suits the bride, do you think it is then perfect?

I think Kim Kardashian’s wedding was OTT for only 72 days of marriage. But all Jokes aside it is hard to define what OTT is for one couple versus another. The day is all about the couple; so if they are known for being over the top it would seem a bit awkward to have a relatively bare wedding whilst for another couple who is simple it would be fitting. It’s all relative to how the guests know them. However there are things about the day that can be OTT even for the most flamboyant of couples such as the wedding attire; the humongous frilly wedding dresses that look like they belong in some “This is the 80s” snapshot topped with a gigantic tiara or the ridiculously shiny wedding suits which are met with squint eyes and crooked heads by all who see it. Basically if you’re making any inspirational references to the ’ My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding’ you’ve gone over board and we can do either of two things, get you a life boat so we can save yourself from yourself or let sink cause you’ve gone too far.

What is your top tip to give to prospective brides who are still choosing their wedding dress?

When it comes to the dress don’t follow fashion trends. Ever looked at a wedding photo and deduced the exact year the wedding took place just by one glimpse at the wedding dress?  Don’t allow yourself to become that girl.

Rather, get inspiration from Bridal magazines and then chose a classic timeless fit that suits your shape and style because those pictures will last a lifetime.

As a wedding guest, what is the most important thing for you to witness at a wedding?

There are three essential moments for me in a wedding the vows, the first kiss as a married couple and the first dance together. Those are the most romantic moments in a wedding and I absolutely love them. In fact they are the only real moments that I make real effect to capture on film.
